The term “Data Security” is usually referring to protecting vital information that is usually stored on personal computers or any computer for that matter. Data security can actually man protecting any of your personal data no matter where it is stored; computers, schools, the government, different organizations and so on and so forth. For this matter, we are going to discuss the protection of data stored on a computer so that it is not compromised and brought into contact with the wrong individuals. There are a number of different precautionary methods one can take to ensure the personal and private data stored away on his or her computer is kept completely safe from the wrong individuals.
The first and most obvious way to secure any personal data on a computer is do what is called file encryption. When a file is encrypted, the data contained within the file is converted into a code that cannot easily be read by other individuals. Encryption can either be done directly to the file on your computer or you can encrypt files that are stored directly to your hard drive. Once the file is encrypted, only you will be able to read it; nobody else will be able to gain access to the file. This encryption can protect the vital information from people who also use the same computer as you, such as a family member, but can also protect the information should an individual try to tamper with the computer.
Sometimes your personal information can be compromised by a virtual threat rather than a physical one. Virtual threats can be any threat that can gain access to or harm your computer through means of the Internet. There are many virtual threats out there, such as hackers, viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware and so on; all of which can bring harm to your computer and sometimes, can even steal personal information from them. There are many different forms of protection that can be bought and installed on to a computer to combat these malicious threats. This protection can come in the form of the latest firewalls that can block any threat trying to come into your computer, or it can be anti-virus programs that will destroy any virus that tries to hurt your computer, or it could be a security package that contains the previously mentioned security features and more.
A lot of people tend to live and work out of their computers, which usually means that there is going to be some personal information on there, that if compromised could potentially bring harm to them or their computer. This is why it is important to protect your computer from all threats, big and small, physical or virtual. Mentioned above, are two of the simplest ways to keep your data safe and secure; there are more complex ways to keep your data secure.
